Buying a COB LED display is not like buying a television. There is no single “model number” that tells you everything, and two quotations that look identical on paper can behave very differently once the wall is installed and switched on.
Most buyers ask about price and screen size first. Those matter, but they are not what decides whether the wall looks good in your boardroom five years from now. Seven specifications do most of that work. Here is what each one means and why it should be on your checklist.
1. Pixel Pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance between the centre of one pixel and the next, measured in millimetres. Smaller pitch means more pixels packed into the same area, and a sharper image when you stand close.
Because flip-chip COB packaging removes the wire bonding limits found in older LED builds, pitches below 1.0mm become possible. AERO’s COB range runs from 0.6mm to 1.87mm.
The practical rule: match pitch to viewing distance. A control room where operators sit two metres away needs a much finer pitch than a lobby wall people walk past from ten metres.
2. Resolution
Pitch and screen size together decide resolution. A large wall built with a coarse pitch may still land below 4K, which becomes obvious the moment you display a spreadsheet or a site drawing.
COB displays support 2K, 4K and 8K builds. Ask your supplier for the exact pixel count of the configuration being quoted, not just the category. If your content is mostly video, 4K is usually plenty. If people will read text on the wall, push for more.
3. Contrast Ratio and Brightness
This is where COB pulls ahead of most alternatives. AERO’s COB displays deliver a contrast ratio between 20,000:1 and 40,000:1 with peak brightness around 2000 cd/m², plus HDR10 support.
High contrast means blacks look genuinely black instead of dark grey. In a room with windows or downlights, that difference is very visible. Brightness matters too, though more is not automatically better. An over-bright wall in a dim auditorium is tiring to watch.
4. Viewing Angle and Colour Consistency
Everyone in the room should see the same image. Flip-chip COB panels offer a 170° horizontal and 170° vertical viewing angle, so colour and brightness stay even from the corner seats.
Colour stability is the related spec people forget. Because the three colour materials are integrated into one uniform light-emitting surface, COB avoids the colour shift that appears when screen temperature or current fluctuates. Ask to see a demo wall running for at least thirty minutes before you judge colour.
5. Durability and Protection
Fine-pitch walls get touched. In retail stores, showrooms and school corridors, that is guaranteed.
Flip-chip COB attaches the die directly to the substrate and covers the surface with a protective layer, which makes the panel resistant to impact, dust and moisture. There are no exposed lamp beads to knock loose. If your wall sits anywhere people can reach it, this spec is worth more than an extra 0.1mm of pitch.
6. Cabinet Design and Installation
A 16:9 cabinet ratio means your content fits without stretching, and panels splice together without visible seams. Anything else forces awkward scaling.
Check the maintenance method as well. Front-access modules let a technician service the wall without pulling it off the mounting, which matters a lot when the display is recessed into a wall or sits behind furniture. Options like SmartLift make servicing simpler in tight spaces.
7. Power Draw and Control System
Flip-chip COB cuts power consumption by roughly 25% compared with conventional packaging, and runs cooler because thermal resistance is lower. Over a wall that stays on ten hours a day, that shows up on the electricity bill and in component lifespan.
Finally, confirm what drives the screen. AERO supplies Android or Windows controllers matched to the wall’s resolution, along with a content management system for scheduling. A brilliant panel with awkward software is a daily frustration.
